Bio

Lucas A. Ferrara, a named partner of Newman Ferrara LLP, has practiced in the landlord-tenant arena, advocating clients' interests in federal, state, and local forums, for over three decades. He has been honored with a New York's Super Lawyers® designation every year since 2007 and has repeatedly achieved "Top 100" recognition.

He has represented the firm's clients in a variety of real-estate disputes, most notably participating in a 28-day trial which culminated in a multi-million-dollar victory and helped secure a settlement in the sum of $42 million on behalf of several thousand tenants living in downtown Manhattan. He has also spearheaded class action litigation throughout the New York City area alleging statutory violations by major property owners which have impacted thousands of tenants.

In 2002, Mr. Ferrara was appointed an Adjunct Professor of Law at New York Law School. Previously he served as Adjunct Associate Professor of Real Estate at New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies, where he instructed various real estate courses. In 1996, he was the recipient of the University's prestigious 'Teachers' Excellence Award.'

Mr. Ferrara's writing credits include numerous essays and articles which have appeared in a variety of publications including New York Newsday, the New York Law Journal, and the New York State Bar Journal. He is the named co-author of the West treatise Landlord and Tenant Practice in New York and has contributed a chapter to West's New York State Administrative Procedure and Practice.

Mr. Ferrara's pro bono activities have included his service as a Special Master in the New York County Supreme Court and as an Arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau and the Civil Court of the City of New York. He has served as an arbitrator with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and served as Chair of a panel that issued over $20 million in compensatory damages as against a major global investment banking, securities and investment management firm.

Prior to his legal career, Mr. Ferrara was affiliated with the Mayor's Voluntary Action Center of the City of New York, where his efforts to promote community service by way of volunteerism were acknowledged by mayoral award certificates.

An active member of various local and national bar associations, Mr. Ferrara has served on the Board of Directors of the New York County Lawyers' Association, served as past Chair of NYCLA's Communications Committee, past Co-Chair of NYCLA's CLE Institute Advisory Board, and, was a member of the organization's Finance Committee. He also served as a delegate to the New York State Bar Association.

Since 2020, he has worked with creatives around the world to produce over 150 award-winning films. Included in his slate of projects are the feature films, “HELP,” directed by Blake Ridder, “MAKEUP,” directed by Hugo Andre, “5000 SPACE ALIENS,” animated and scored by Scott Bateman, “MANOR OF DARKNESS,” directed by Blake Ridder, and “CHILDREN OF THE PINES,” directed by Joshua Morgan.

He has also produced an array of critically acclaimed shorts, such as, “PRAGMA,” starring Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), “SELF-CHARM,” starring BAFTA Winner Bukky Bakray (Rocks), “WHY WOULDN’T I BE?,” starring Harry Collett (Doolittle) and Elizabeth Berrington (The Nevers), “BETTER GET BETTER,” starring Elisha Applebaum (Fate: The Winx Saga), and, “FIND THE LIGHT,” directed by Forbes “30 Under 30” honoree Abdullah Khan, and starring George MacKay (1917). Another upcoming film with Mr. Khan, called, “PATH TO ECSTASY,” starring Laura Main (Call the Midwife), Michael Jibson (Hamilton), and Louis Ashbourne Serkis (The Kid Who Would Be King), is currently competing in film festivals throughout the world.

Mr. Ferrara is proud to have been involved in the making of “FRANK & EMMET,” which was a 2023 Oscar-eligible short.
