Mr. Sudekum is the Senior Partner at Sudekum, Cassidy & Shulruff, Chtd. For more than 30 years he has concentrated his practice in defending insurance companies in a myriad of settings, primarily those involving extra-contractual damages, coverage analysis and fires and explosions.

Before founding the firm Mr. Sudekum served a law clerk to the Hon. James A. Pudlowski of the Missouri Court of Appeals-Eastern Division. He was also a partner at a major Chicago law firm where he analyzed and defended first-party insurance claims and third-party cases involving built-up medical specials and loss of income.

Mr. Sudekum has conducted hundreds of examinations under oath, provided countless coverage opinions and successfully tried numerous insurance fraud cases to verdict. He also regularly handles appeals resulting from cases the firm resolve’s at trial. As a result of his vast experience, he is one of the recognized leaders in Chicago in defending insurers in cases involving extra-contractual damages.

Mr. Sudekum has been A-V rated by Martindale Hubbell for in excess of 20 years. He has also been selected to Super Lawyers for numerous years in recognition of his work providing insurance coverage advice and counsel. Mr. Sudekum was recently selected to be among America’s Top 100 Civil Defense Litigators. He served as the Illinois and Indiana editor of the “Annotations to the Homeowners Policy” (2nd edition) prepared by the Property Insurance Law Committee of the American Bar Association’s Tort and Insurance Practice Section. Mr. Sudekum also was appointed by the Honorable Neil F. Hartigan, Attorney General of the State of Illinois, to author a portion of the “Attorney General Arson Training and Prosecution Manual.”

Admissions/Memberships/Presentations

Mr. Sudekum is admitted to practice law before the United States Supreme Court, the Seventh Circuit of the United States Courts of Appeal, the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Illinois Supreme Court.

Mr. Sudekum and the firm are members CLM, the largest professional association in the insurance industry. He is also a member of the American Bar Association’s Tort Insurance Practice Section and its Committee on Property Insurance.

Mr. Sudekum has given numerous talks and seminars on subjects dealing with litigating insurance claims including the efficient resolution of cases involving extra-contractual damages, examinations under oath and the evidence necessary to win explosion and fire cases. Mr. Sudekum has also served as a seminar panelist at the Property Loss & Liability Conferences hosted by the Property Loss Research Bureau (“PLRB”).

Education

Mr. Sudekum graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a B.A in Political Science in 1977. He received his J.D. from St. Louis University Law School in 1980.
