Bio

Fred is a shareholder in Cooper & Scully's Houston office.  He was born in St. Louis, Missouri and obtained his undergraduate degree from Duke University in Economics and German where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.  He attended Washington University School of Law and was inducted into the "Order of the Coif" and the "Order of the Barrister" upon graduation.

Fred started his legal career is St. Louis and was part of the legal team for the longest running jury trial in American jurisprudence, Kemner v. Monsanto.

After meeting his future wife, Fred moved to Houston in 1990 and found his legal passion, insurance coverage and insurance litigation. Fred has been representing insurance companies and insureds since 1992 with respect to both commercial and personal insurance issues.  He has handled hundreds of matters arising from Hurricane Rita, Hurricane Ike, and Hurricane Dolly.  He was part of the trial and appellate team for the Trinity Universal Insurance Company v. Bleeker case and helped define the term "occurrence" in Hartford Insurance Company v. Meridian Oil.

Fred is also at home in the court room.  He spent almost two years in the Rio Grande Valley and his last trial there resulted in a defense verdict in a trucking fatality case.

Fred has been named to the Texas Super Lawyers list (by Thompson Reuters) in the area of Insurance Coverage from 2007 to present and was named as a member of Super Lawyer's Blue Ribbon panel in 2015.  He was named as a top lawyer in Insurance Law by American Lawyer Media and Martindale Hubbell in 2013 and 2014.

When Fred is not in the office or the courtroom, he travels throughout the country presenting seminars on coverage and extra-contractual issues to his clients. Fred participates in the Houston Bar Association’s “Teach Texas” program which teaches 7th graders about the Texas and Federal Court Systems. Fred also teaches two insurance courses at South Texas College of Law Houston.

Fred is licensed to practice law in the States of Texas, Missouri and Illinois along with all Federal District Courts in Texas and the Federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
